New Mexico to require cancer vaccine for 6th-grade girls

New Mexico is on the verge of becoming the latest state to require girls entering sixth grade to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitting virus that can cause cervical cancer, a spokesman for the governor said today.

Local Football Star Claims Muslim Faith Cost Him Scholarship

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a grievance against New Mexico State football coach Hal Mumme, saying he discriminated against a former Bay Area football star when he took Muammar Ali’s scholarship away after repeatedly questioning him about al-Qaida.

State Seizes Overweight Child

The parents of a toddler in New Mexico say they have lost custody of the 3-year-old girl because they couldn’t control her weight. Anamarie Martinez-Regino weighs 120 pounds and is 3½ feet tall — three times heavier and 50 percent taller than an average 3-year-old, according to the girl’s physician, Monika Mahal, who made the recommendation that she be removed from her parents’ custody.
